Terms of service
Last updated 17 October 2026
These are the rules for using Kova, written to be read. They apply whenever you use Kova, including guest chat without an account, and you agree to them when you create an account. Please skim at least the parts about your material, academic integrity and payments.

Your account
- You need to be 13 or older to use Kova. Kova is made for university and college students.
- One account per person. Keep your password to yourself; you're responsible for what happens under your account.
- Use a real email address you can receive mail at, so you can confirm your account and reset your password. Until it's confirmed, AI use is limited, and after 7 days an unconfirmed account can't sign in until it is.
If you're under 18
- You need a parent's or guardian's permission to use Kova, and they should read these terms with you. By creating an account you confirm you have it.
- In Quebec, anyone under 14 needs a parent's or guardian's consent before Kova can collect their information. Without it, don't sign up.
- Paying for Pro or a semester pass needs your parent's or guardian's agreement too. If a payment was made without it, they can ask for a refund at Kova support.
- If we learn an account belongs to someone under 13, or to someone under 14 in Quebec without that consent, we delete it and refund any unused paid time.
Your material
You own what you upload, and you own what Kova makes from it. You give Kova permission to store and process your material only to provide the service to you, which includes sending it to the AI providers listed in the privacy policy.
Only upload material you're allowed to use. Lecture slides usually belong to your instructor or school; using them for your own study is normally fine, but don't use Kova to redistribute course material to others.
Guest chat and the homepage demo send what you type to an AI provider too, without an account. Don't put personal information in them.
Academic integrity
Kova is a study tool. It helps you learn your own course material; it isn't for completing graded work. You're responsible for following your school's and your instructors' rules on AI tools, which can differ from course to course.
AI can be wrong
Study guides, flashcards, quizzes and chat answers are written by AI models and can contain mistakes. When your material has slides or pages (PDF and PowerPoint files), Kova shows the slide or page each card and quiz question came from so you can check it. The AI picks that reference, so it can occasionally be off, and cards you write yourself don't have one. Your lecture material and your instructor are the authority, not Kova.
Acceptable use
Don't use Kova to:
- Break the law or infringe someone else's rights.
- Upload malware, or try to access other people's accounts or data.
- Get around plan limits, for example with scripts or multiple accounts.
- Resell Kova or its output as a service, or scrape it.
- Generate content that harasses or harms other people.
Plans and payment
Kova offers guest chat (no account, a few messages a day), a Free plan and a paid Pro plan. The current limits and prices are on the pricing page. Pro is sold through Stripe, and the total you pay is shown at checkout before you pay.
Fair use of AI. Every AI request costs Kova money, so every account has an AI allowance: a spending limit for each billing period, counted in what your chats, lectures, quizzes, grading and cards cost Kova to run. The pricing page shows roughly how far it goes.
- On Pro, the allowance is sized to what you paid for the period. On a yearly plan or a semester pass, it builds up a month at a time, and what you don't use carries forward.
- On Free, it's a fixed amount each calendar month, starting over on the 1st (UTC). Until you confirm your email it's smaller, and chat is limited to a few messages in total.
- On Pro, chat switches from the smart models to the fast ones partway through, so it lasts longer.
- If you reach it, new AI requests pause: chat, new lectures and quizzes, grading written answers, and making cards. They start again when your next billing period begins (on a yearly plan or a pass, when the next month's share is added). Flashcard review and everything you've already made keep working, and nothing is charged. Plan & usage, in Account, shows how much you've used.
- Separately, Free has a daily limit on AI use across all of Kova. If it's reached, new AI requests on Free pause for everyone until midnight UTC, starting with new and unconfirmed accounts. Pro isn't affected.
Free plan limits may change over time. If a price for a plan you're already paying for goes up, you'll be told before your next renewal, and you can cancel before it applies.
Cancelling and refunds
Monthly and annual Pro renew automatically until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from Plan & usage in Account, under Manage billing. You keep Pro until the end of the period you've already paid for, and you won't be charged again. We don't refund the unused part of a period you cancel partway through. You can also switch between monthly and annual there: moving to annual starts right away, with credit for the unused part of your month; moving to monthly starts when your paid year ends.
The semester pass is a single payment for 120 days (about 4 months) of Pro. It never renews and your card isn't charged again, so there's nothing to cancel. Buying another pass adds 120 days on top of the time you have left. You can't buy a pass while a subscription is still running (even one you've cancelled that hasn't ended yet), and you can start a subscription once your pass ends.
Refunds: if you were charged for a renewal you meant to cancel, or bought a semester pass by mistake, email Kova support within 7 days of the charge and you'll get a full refund. When a subscription payment is refunded in full, that subscription is cancelled at once. When a semester pass is refunded in full, its unused days end at once; days you've already used don't change, and a pass you bought after it moves up. A partial refund doesn't change your plan. Nothing here limits any refund rights you have under the consumer protection law where you live.
Disputed payments: if you dispute a charge with your bank and the money is taken back, the same happens as with a full refund. If the dispute is decided in Kova's favour, a pass's lost days are added back after any time you have left (unless the payment was also refunded); a cancelled subscription stays cancelled, and you can subscribe again.
If a payment fails, Stripe retries it for a while and you keep Pro for up to 7 days from the first failed attempt. If it hasn't been collected by then, your account moves to Free until it is.
When Pro ends for any reason, you keep everything you made. New lectures, quizzes, uploads, courses and chat then follow the Free plan's limits; for example, you can't add a course while you have two or more.
Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time in Account, under Privacy & security. That permanently erases your account and everything you made in it, and cancels any subscription at once. Paid time you haven't used yet, whether the rest of a subscription period or semester-pass days, ends with the account and isn't refunded; to use it up first, cancel in Manage billing and delete once it ends. The privacy policy lists the few records that are kept without your name on them. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms; if that happens to a paid account for reasons other than abuse, you'll get a refund for the unused time.
Changes to Kova and these terms
Kova is under active development, so features will change. If these terms change in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and you'll hear about it before the new terms apply. Continuing to use Kova after that means you accept them.
The legal part
Kova is provided as it is, without guarantees that it will always be available, error-free, or right. To the extent the law allows, Kova isn't liable for indirect losses, such as a lower grade, and its total liability to you is limited to what you paid for Kova in the 12 months before the claim.
These terms are governed by the laws of Ontario, Canada.
